Feeding the Bear: A Closer Look at Russian Army Logistics and the Fait Accompli (warontherocks.com)

This article from November discusses Russian logistics capabilities in the event of an invasion of the Baltics or Poland. Their logistics capabilites in Ukraine don't seem to be much better, as indicated by reports of Russian columns stopping due to a lack of fuel.

To summarize the article: Russian first echelon forces carry enough supplies for ~90 miles of fighting, after which they'll need to pause to regroup and resupply. Therefore, they plan to acomplish most objectives in that space, or at least ensure conditions are right to resume the advance afterwards.

The Russian attack in Ukraine seems to have stalled at about the 90 mile mark, and the attempted capture of Kyiv on the first day by airborne troops was possibly an effort to acomplish an objective before a logistics pause was needed. Now that it _has_ been a couple of days of resupply though, the Russian advance is likely to resume.

All of the rail links between Russia and Ukraine were blown up by Ukrainians a couple days ago https://twitter.com/KyivIndependent/status/14976144589733068... and from what I can tell Russians weren’t able to secure many (any?) air fields, leaving them to rely entirely on trucks, so the analysis there should broadly reflect current Russian logistical capabilities.
