Thought it was worth a read.

Seems reasonable and closer to American averages than I would have expected.


Good article but, like a lot of stategic studies pieces, grossly underestimates what the American industrial base is capable of.

1. The US is second in the world, behind Ukraine, in military drone production.

2. The US is a close second to China in logistics + last mile drone production.

3. The US is still the only country with the proven ability to move mass anywhere in the world.

None of this means that the US will win a hot war against China. However, that has - always - been the case. The US fought against China in Korea and SE Asia/Vietnam and had the opportunity twice to move the conflict into Chinese territory. They didn't, for obvious reasons.

Geography + LOCs + population are a b***h.

Are there any vessels proved to move mass anywhere, which are still alive from the latest moving mass happened? AFAIK, all those ships are not in service, and all American males got somewhat femalified.


Yes, well over a hundred iirc that the US can requisition on day one of a conflict. America still leads here.

Worth noting that, outside of WW2, the US has never really had a large merchant fleet.

Second, are you sure? Everything I can find indicates that the Big Mac slightly increased (and further, the "Big Mac index" is a meme, which may dampen increases for image reasons), and everything else on the menu, on average, increased even more than the Big Mac. Is my data bad?

A Big Mac meal in the states (fried and drink) cost 2.99 USD in 1990.

It now costs around 8.50 USD.

The inflation adjusted value of 2.99 USD in 1990 is about 7.88 USD.

Did the price go up? Sure. Are you likely getting slightly more in 2026 than you were in 1990? No idea, but it seems plausible to me.

Inflation is the answer.

All of talk about the technical merits or demerits misses the point. I can spout of a dozen or more memorized IPv4 addresses. IPv6? Good luck.


There's nothing stopping you from using memorable ULA prefixes on your LAN [0] and requiring the use of DHCPv6 for addressing so that each host gets a host part that is easy to remember. Hand-selecting your ULA prefix abandons the collision-resistance that you get from using The Technique to generate one, but if that's something you don't care about, then it's something you don't care about.

Plus, manual address assignment is just as viable in an IPv6 world as it is in IPv4.

[0] fd00::/64 is quite easy to remember, as are fd00::1 and similar.


Another option for simplicity in dual stack is to assign visually similar addresses:

    - ipv4: 192.168.0.42
    - ipv6: prefix:192:168:0:42
I only do this for static/server machines, configuring Linux with a fixed ipv4, and append the fixed ipv6 host to the Router Advertisement prefix.


If I hadn't put my long-running machines' -er- ULA-derived [0] SLAAC addresses into my local DNS ages ago, I'd either do exactly that, or slice off the "redundant" parts of the IPv4 address off, so that I could choose to assign sixteen additional bits of addresses to each host. That is:

  - ipv6: prefix:192:168:0:42
would become

  - ipv6: prefix::0:42:[0-ffff]
[0] I'm really not sure how to succinctly say "The autonomously-configured addresses on my LAN's ULA prefix".


The Swiss public transport system is a century-plus old at this point. Compare pictures of the Zurich tram system in the early 20th century with today - squint your eyes and you won't notice any difference.

That said, I'm willing to bet that San Fransisco and the surrounding communities had comparable public transportation in the 19th and early 20th century. While I can't speak for the bay area, you can still find exposed tram tracks in many US cities - Philadelphia, for instance.

The US's move from having the best to arguably the worst public transportation system in the world among developed countries is a lesson in disastrous government policy.


East coast cities were built before modern building codes.

Something that, for some reason, people in the states don't want to accept is that - when given the choice - the vast majority of people prefer living in dense urban environments.


OP addresses that. Japan is not particularly dense, especially outside of core downtowns.

You see the same dynamics in London and Paris.

People do not "prefer to live in dense urban environments" by urbanist standards.

They prefer to live in dense urban environments by North American standards, which can still be far less dense than urbanists really want.

May be an assumption on my part, but the language "people prefer to live in dense urban environment" is typical of urbanism-boosters - who definitely push a lot online that leads one to believe that anything less than inner Tokyo is unacceptable.

Nobody wants to live there, it's too crowded and there's too much demand for housing! Oh wait, that makes no sense.

You are required to live there, its not a choice.


It's a very US-centric perspective to assume that density = cities.

Almost every town in the US, at one point, was dense enough to support a vibrant main street. Many (most?) of them even had tram lines and other forms of public transportation.

It's not an either or proposition. You can have cost-effective infrastructure through relative density without having to deal with all of the trappings - good and bad - that come from a city.

The vast majority of people REQUIRE to live NEAR their employment which happens to be in cities.

Look what happened to NYC real estate rent when you gave people the choice of NOT doing that. Look what happens when you force them back to the office, they come back, but not by choice.


It takes under a minute to find reputable sources which say that something on the order of 3 out 4 people prefer a suburban city environment. The remainder splits between preferring rural or dense urban.


Do you have a source for this? What threshold is needed for it to be 'dense'?

Rail <-> Road isn't an either or issue. It wasn't in 1850 and it isn't today. The only difference, at least in the US, is that poorly designed government intervention/policies forced low population densities.

Rail and other forms of public transport simply don't work with suburban sprawl. Large roadways also don't work - compare the state of US infrastructure against pretty much every other country out there - it's just that the financial bill from an unbelievable amount of deferred maintenance hasn't come due yet.
