There is nothing that special about bioweapons, there are plenty of bacteria that will kill you just fine. Americans even have free samples on their salad.

The reason that madmen and terrorists choose kinetic weapons is because the knowledge and materials are more readily available... of and also that even terrorists are likely aware that their own people would suffer. A halfway decent synthetic biology lab (no need to invoke CRISPR) can make e.g. smallpox without a sample of the original disease, just from the gene sequences. Basically all state actors could do this if they wanted to without an LLM. What barrier that a terrorist organization faces today to having a functioning synthetic biology lab does an LLM actually solve?

With current gaps in DNA synthesis screening yes. But this will be improved in the future hopefully.

I really want open weight models. Otherwise, I see no other path outside of the labs eventually not being allowed to/wanting to release model access at all, and instead just eating all the verticals. That would be a horrible near-term business outcome.

This becomes simple math once you hire smart and competent people that tell you that there is no path towards agi.

The aim of war is to make political change and gain control of opponent. it is much more valuable to capture datacenters, infra and semiconductor fabricaton than to destroy and rebuild it.

Data labeling is pretty big industry in some countries and I guess dropping 200 kilodollars on labeling is beyond the reach of most academics, even if they would not care about ethics of that.

You have to keep in mind that it's not like anthropic just asked mythos to "find fancy bug, make no mistakes" and got the result.

my quick read of the process they describe is that first they asked agents to rank files in order of potential to have interesting bugs, then they launch agents for each file in order of "interesting bug potential" and finally launch another agent for verification. (maybe i am mistaken, this is my read of this post https://red.anthropic.com/2026/mythos-preview/ )

it's not clear to me if they made just one pass over each file or made several passes for same file, but regardless, I think if you recreate roughly same process and burn 20000$ on tokens with other reasonably good model, you will find some fancy bugs too.
