Maybe this will be a clearer question: What does "local-first" mean in the title that you typed in for this HN submission?

Local first means running Atomic with local models is not an afterthought. It’s a first class citizen that works just as seamlessly as running with a cloud provider - assuming you’ve done the work to provision the local models and their connections yourself.

I've definitely seen these in more homes and offices than anything from La Marzocco.

The fact that it costs a tenth of the La Marzocco Linea Mini helps a lot.

They shuttered a marketing department -- the Content Growth team -- and Tesla still has marketing teams around the world.

No, it requires more than a stroke of the pen, and the stroke of the pen that was required happened in 2024. It's been DEA foot-dragging ever since, which is what Trump's executive order last year addressed.

Which prospective candidates were you expecting to run on "legalize it"?

I don't think it defeats the purpose. Your audience will find you. Once that happens, you will start getting feedback, and then you can decide how to handle that. Closing the door just means your audience can't find you in the first place.

Any farmer who is buying these tractors already has a kawasaki mule for that stuff.

Good luck reusing that existing hardware when the bespoke battery is no longer available. As far as I know this is the only laptop maker with an open-access (open source?) charging circuit, no reverse-engineering needed.

Also there's a user story out there where a laptop is a mobile terminal and the actual processing power happens remotely in the cloud. With modern agentic workflows and how fast they're changing it makes sense to optimize for longevity on the client hardware.

Depending on the model though, aftermarket (or even new old stock) is readily available. If you buy used business class laptops like I do, you’re all but guaranteed to be in good shape regarding at least batteries.

Interesting claims in this article that direcly conflict with Palantir publicly calling for universal conscription. If AI and robotics are going to keep people off the front lines, why would we need the draft?

On the contrary. However, they tend to manually manage memory rather than outsourcing it to a language runtime or a distributed key-value store.
