Would be a great way for up and coming researchers to learn and apply skills before attempting to work in labs pursuing novel research.

Maybe some joint effort across a large number of research schools which function as “proportional to number of students in your program, X number of validation studies must be performed” with maybe some monetary or access incentives aligned.

Since we’ve had student loans all but guaranteed, and therefore cost of schooling skyrocketing, the flywheel of pursing higher profits and more bureaucratic cruft (looking at ratios of university staff to students), its no wonder that incentive has extended to research.

Also, the $20/month subscriptions are HEAVILY subsidized, so it's not an apples-to-apples comparison really

It is a completely reasonable comparison for me as a consumer, since they're the costs and benefits that I'll actually get.

For now yes. But don't count on it staying that way. Even month to month the actual allowances change.

For the amount of tokens you get, based on your comment, ALL subscriptions are heavily subsidized, and the most expensive ones are the most subsidized.

For OpenAI and Anthropic, the $100 subscriptions cost 5x the $20 subscriptions and give you 5x the tokens. And the $200 subscriptions are 10x the cost for 20x the tokens. (Tokens cost 50% as much.)

We should be mindful of the context that many of these providers VERY likely have been selling their subscriptions at a substantial loss

So as much as i agree “more profits to stakeholders screw the customer”, i think its more of an emergency to get to profitability before the music stops.

> We should be mindful of the context that many of these providers VERY likely have been selling their subscriptions at a substantial loss.

what makes you think this?

Because everyone keeps saying this so it must be true. Real "it is known" kind of vibe with these statements.

He's a subscription truther. There's loads of them. OpenAI's profit increases with each subscription that is cancelled. Pretty soon they'll have more profit than God.

Money market/treasuries (even ETF like SGOV) gets pretty close to 5% when typical savings rate is a bit under

If treasuries “fail” we have a different class of problem.

>Money market/treasuries (even ETF like SGOV) gets pretty close to 5% when typical savings rate is a bit under

???

30 Day SEC Yield as of Aug 24, 2026: 3.61%

12m Trailing Yield as of Aug 24, 2026: 3.74%

https://www.ishares.com/us/products/314116/ishares-0-3-month...

1.39% might not seem like a lot, but that's off by more than a quarter.

Rates are around 3.5% right now before taxes.

There's still many high interest savings accounts that are at least 4%

And you still need at least 5% to do what OP is suggesting.

Ah yes, California the land of regulations. A compliance tax for the tire companies, less freedom of choice from consumers, and likely inferior products for a hefty subset of use cases. Tale as old as time.

Most of my model usage comes from my work’s model selection (which is now down to just Claude models)

I’ll try out the latest models, but mainly stick with Claude only because I’m most used to its quirks and how to work around them. I imagine this is part of these hyperscalers playbook.

I will say though, I miss Sol model at work. It with Codex was amazing at first-shot understanding. Claude i need to scope out where to look otherwise a large portion of my token budget is eaten up

This is a national security nightmare. For better or worse, fossil fuels have massive energy densities, which makes economics in defense context (and others) extremely favorable.

Even with today’s energy polices, electricity costs have skyrocketed (this was the case before the data center demand). Couple that with electrification of vehicles, phase out of natural gas/oil heaters, I think its reckless abandon to push policies which harm middle and lower class families. Not to say some of these countries even consider nuclear energy “evil”. Absolutely ridiculous.

I apologize, but I must disagree.

The national security nightmare is the dependency on fossil fuel sources. If we were to lose our crude oil supplies because of a war in the Middle East, blocking a strait for tankers, we would be well and truly fucked. We don't produce enough domestic natural gas to replace it.

The only options we have today are solar, wind, and, given enough time, nuclear. These three sources remove external dependencies for generating energy. I'm not sure how much uranium we have in the States, but once the blades are spinning or the sun is shining, we keep getting energy, and no war overseas can stop that.

Electric prices are climbing because we're doing externalities wrong. For example, utility charges for data centers should be significantly higher than what we charge residential and non-DC businesses. The goal is for data centers to absorb the cost of the impact they have on the grid and water.

They could have on-prem power plants, but those plants should belong to the local utility and charge the data centers the data center rate. It also should be a surcharge for the air pollution those fossil fuel monstrosities create. Again, paying for the externalities.

They could get a break if they deployed gigawatts of solar and batteries or used their waste heat for district heating, but yeah, I'm tired of letting them get away with dumping externalities on us. We now have a nicely delineated scenario where we can focus it on them and make them pay.

In the EU's case, dependence on Russian gas is already a national security nightmare.

I experienced similar reaction when i was doing keto. It became far more difficult to burn that summer

Why did you stop?

Tell that to struggling family’s electric bills

Happily, and in fact it's the only responsible thing to do for somebody that says they care about struggling families!

Struggling families: off-grid electricity generation for clean fertilizers do not affect your electricity rates. Anybody who tries to get you angry about that is misdirecting your attention from the factors that do affect your electricity prices. If you want lower electricity prices, focus on reigning in your PUC to represent you rather than utility profits.

Or cut out the middle man and get your own solar. Who are the people in California paying $0.35/kWh to the power company when rooftop solar is less than a third of that?

Struggling families can’t buy their own off grid power generation.

I take this one rather personally as a friend of mine has had his power shut off now for the last month. I set him up with a gasoline generator which seems like the opposite of green. Electric should be very cheap and abundant.

> Struggling families can’t buy their own off grid power generation.

The premise is that the installment payments on the solar system are less than the monthly bill from paying the power company for the same amount of electricity. It can't be the thing they can't afford when it's the thing that costs less.

Right? You can go off grid anywhere. Well in some places you legally can't, and need to remain connected with a connection fee, but nobody is forcing you to draw any power from it.

what does this have to do with fertilizer production again?

I imagine part of the performance issue is their encryption flow? Their search is sub par even with the on-device search enabled, but besides that i’ve been a happy customer for a few years now. Catch all domain, multiple domains, their cli lets you download all messages and I setup a RAG flow to better search.

Regarding outages, this is the first one I’ve actually noticed and affected me. Obviously not great, but maybe I’ve been deluded in seeing GitHub‘s fiasco of what acceptable means.
