Who's a pretty boy?

Thanks to Merlin Bird ID, I've got rather into birds in the past few years. We have a robin and blackbird that hang out in the garden with us, seemingly unafraid. A couple of months back I bought a camera feeder [0] but we've still only had three bird types that visit - a coal tit who comes fairly infrequently but moves so fast the camera could easily be missing him, some amazing jackdaws who seem to take turns on the feeder, and some Eurasian magpies who are absolute fucking arseholes. I made the mistake of putting a mealworm / seed mix in the feeder once, and the mealworms were so prized by the magpies that they worked out how to empty it completely within minutes of me filling it, throwing all the seed that they weren't interested in on the floor. I've stopped putting mealworms in it now, but now they empty it just to make sure there's none in there. I'm going to have to take it down and try to fashion some kind of grate to make it much harder to get the seeds out.

[0] https://naturespy.org - not the best resolution, but plenty good enough for up close video of the birds. I did a fair bit of research and loved the fact that these guys are a social enterprise who put their profits back into conservation projects. Highly recommended.

Oh, and my other favourite corvid story - there's a guy that walks three very old dogs in my local park and he occasionally throws tiny treats down for them as they walk around. Crows started following him around the park for the treats the dogs missed, so then he started feeding them to the crows too, and now he walks slowly around the park with 3 old dogs and about 5 crows ambling along with him all in a fairly tight little group. I love crows.

My kids are very unlikely to get shot at school.

I came quite close to buying a tube carriage a couple of years ago but it was slightly too long for where I wanted to put it.

Got an email from Zed about the same this morning.

Good timing, thanks, just scratched Blacksmith off my shortlist. Depot is the current front runner.

I can't imagine they'd release a crappy folding thing like the Samsung, I think it's more likely to be effectively dual-screen that can be unfurled into something where the two screens are side by side.

> a crappy folding thing like the Samsung

This is the only phone I've seen people move away from iPhone to get, I know at least 3 women who switched from iPhone to android to get the folding clamshell Samsung and all love it.

The triple folding phone is interesting to me but I still am not at the point where I feel comfortable having a $2K phone. Where you can get a Motorolla with 12GB of RAM for $80

I mention RAM as Android with 4GB of ram is almost unusable.

Are you citing subsidized prices, or used prices? I can only find $80 Motorolas used or locked, e.g.: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D323V72S and that's 4GB

12GB seems to get up into $200+, and that's still a lot of "renewed" listings.

You can find quirky little loss-leader deals here and there sometimes but I don't think you're getting 12GB of RAM for $80 on a routine basis.

I was listening to this ep/podcast on Hackaday about a 12GB $50 Motorola phone

https://hackaday.com/2026/05/26/linux-on-android-provides-in...

But yeah they're usually carrier locked, I personally use Verizon prepaid and my 8GB Motorola phone is above $80 but not $600 either, it's $200

https://www.verizon.com/smartphones/motorola-moto-g-power-20...

Anyway it's certainly not the same phone as a flagship folding phone but for daily everyday needs more than adequate, I even was able to run multiple gig apps eg. DoorDash/Uber Eats on the 8GB model.

I will say what people consider "worth the money" varies since I bought a $1,000.00 radar detector and it's like who buys that...

Might be ram boost that's bumping from 8 to 12GB

It would be very funny if Apple's next innovative flagship product is a Surface Duo

It only gets worse from there.

I actually had to look at my keyboard as I'd forgotten there even was a play button.

My mac opens Music for func + enter. Sometimes I accidentally have the function button held down as I hit enter. Then whatever app I’m trying to use to type loses its focus to this app I never use.

Yeah but does your Mac have a key combo to launch LinkedIn? Windows +1, Mac 0

You close LinkedIn? ;-)

Is this real?!

yes hold down all the things on the bottom left of your keyboard on windows, then press "L". so that's ctrl+alt+shift+win+L

It's on F8 on my laptop... of course i only remember when i try to do something and end up with Apple Music.

The whimsy in this can absolutely do one in 2026.
