Sounds like someone is selling securities without a license tbh.

From skimming, I see at least 5 places where this is reiterated on the page.

It's also not a sale of any sort. They're asking for pledges and have an accredited investor question.

And this is why local AI is going to be the future.

Local AI is almost impossible right now with the prices of RAM and GPUs and the sizes of decent models. No way spending even an optimistic 10k, but more likely 20k, on a setup that is good for 5-6 months makes any financial sense.

Not yet, but it's only a matter of time. Local AI doesn't need to be bleeding edge either. Even capabilities of older modals would be fine.

I disagree wholeheartedly. Older models do not perform anywhere near as well as newer models, and certainly not once you throw in agents that can sense check, security check, refa tor and balance, and research queries as they run behind the scenes.

Just get a Mac?

Impossible to find Mac minis in some areas, and if this goes through expect it to get worse.

I settled for the AMD rough equivalent. It’s not perfect but it can still handle most of the work. Now if only extra ram would come down in price… I find I need about 5 GB more than I have

Macs will just get more expensive. C'mon man, we're supposed to be Silicon Valley engineers, the pinnacle of human intellect.

This is the way. WordPress's is so popular because you can get it to do or be anything. I have done some terrible terrible things to WordPress. Need a simple blog? No problem! Want a LMS? Sure why not! e-commerce? Go for it! CRM? Absolutely! Etc etc.

But there are many many "WordPress" developers out there that only know how to glue plugins together, so you often end up with plugin soup.

In the hands of someone who actually knows how to code you don't have any issues.

My best guess is ads.

Why is it on Google to stop this and not the banks?

What can Bank X do to stop phone malware from scraping the user's session token from the Bank X app or website?

Yes, banks should (and sometimes do) double- and triple-check with you before allowing large transfers/withdrawals, but scammers know how to coach their victims past this. Speaking from experience.

(I also don't fully agree this is Google's responsibility, and I am not happy about this development. But there are legitimate points in favor of outsourcing the question of "will this software do nefarious things" to some kind of trusted signing authority.)

Don't do instant non-reversible transfers. Specially for a transaction that is highly likely to be fraud. I.e. person transfers to someone you haven't done business with before or foreign accounts. Also the fraud detection needs to go both ways.

they can wait.

how would the clueless victim check anyway?

Because they want to shake the image that the iPhone is for the average person while Android is for technical people who take the risk of malware and scams.

There are more grandmas who just want their banking secure than there are FOSS advocates wanting full system access.

Fly-by

The technology doesn't exist and it would be a huge waste of money.

How heavy would a telephone pole sized tungsten rod be?

What happens when China, Russia, India or Pakistan find out you are building this (cause you can't hide it if it's in near earth orbit)? They would either knock it out of the sky or hit you with everything they have. We would do the exact same if anyone else was developing such a weapon.

I personally would get whatever metal in space, so weight is not the issue - solving this problem would also create almost immediately chunks of rocks that could also be dropped. In all reality, anything can be "setup" to be a weapon - many ways have been identified here.

All required innovations - of which, most are not out of reach in the slightest, all of that tech would be immensely valuable, literally everything we do to secure space superiority will be actual gains - not smaller microchips equivalent innovations - entirely new machines, entirely new economies of scale - there is no equivalent military tech that we can develop on earth.

Not only is there really no conceivable way to ignore the strategic advantage once considered, the long-term economic payoff is actually reason enough alone to pursue the radical idea of a "space battleship" - I can think of about 20 ways to cause significant global issues with one measly space battleship.

As a hypothetical alone, it has reason enough to warrant a substantial amount of the 1.5 trillion defense budget the Pentagon plays with.

If this is satire, it's not that funny. If you're serious, it's a good example of 'the ugly American.'

I wish it were satire - we do actually need to have space defenses, asteroids exist 2st off - its just bc we ignore all the craters that we sleep at night.

We feel safe here on earth but it's really a giant graveyard trap - that so effectively exerts control over life on it, that it made all living mammals out of mice - we may actually be safer on almost any other planet.

All life on earth has eventually died out so far, we are the 1st species that could stop the most likely extinction level event - but this DART is the closest we ever got to actually taking up that responsibility - the preservation of our species and whatnot, thats just 1 minor reason.

The most important tho, given how much we have example of people "getting theirs" at all other peoples expense - this is much worse if a non-state actor gets there 1st.

Lastly, I do have to clarify the American position - we run the world, or there will not be one to run. Nobody alive today made that decision - it changes nothing, once that choice was made, we are locked into it. Did you think we are only an economic power? That is the front. We can always pivot to actual power - the kind that can destroy all cities above a certain size - we have never hid this fact, the whole world knows of MAD. That is what power is.

What is American power if someone can destroy the US and we can't destroy them?? That doesn't work for the US - nothing at all changes if the US gets that spaceship first.

You can call this ugly - there were more modern wars before we started running things, from the looks of things - the whole world will go to war the moment we are out of the picture.

Nah they are pretty good a banning users that don't follow the guidelines.

Yes, and it’s not like they just insta-ban every infraction.

I’ve broken the guidelines on this site before. The mods reply and say “hey, stop doing that, here is the guideline”. I stopped doing it. Life continues.

(They do react differently if you show a pattern of disregard rather than a one-time event; ‘dang before’ might pull up some of those in a search.)

One of the virtues of HN is polite prodding when the rules are broken.

What I can't understand is why? Let's ignore the moral question for a second. I can't imagine an LLM is the right tool for this at all.

When you have a hammer as big as an LLM a lot of problems start to look like nails.

Volume vs accuracy

"Maybe we break a couple eggs making this omelette!"

Where omelette?

The modern right wing is all in on AI tools, in part because of their particular beliefs about the nature of expertise and general humanity.

We’ve seen AI tools used for tons and tons of inappropriate things over the last year. Reviewing research grants, aid programs, and regulations? Why not? Publishing propaganda on Twitter? Sure thing! Finding “fraud” in state benefits? Absolutely!

There’s a belief amongst these people that AI tools are better than human judgement and represent an inevitable future where CEO kings operate the world. Why not also apply it to war?

It's basically an OSINT query tool.

Because it is being sold to government by cronies.

One possibility would be: when I look at the current administration, it's a bunch of bros that don't really know anything except how to succeed between other bros they spend time with, so they need Claude for anything that involves actually knowing something. It's a stretch because you would hope the army is not run by morons, but I would no longer bet that they didn't do this because Hegseth asked Claude and influenced the decision after discussing it over Signal with other bros. The culture is driven by the person in charge, who is also incompetent for anything that doesn't involve dealing with loans and still making out ok despite the bankruptcy.

No way to actually enforce that. It would be an honor system.

You can verify it by checking the authors handwriting, the color of their ink and how the tip of the pen has indented the paper. That is difficult to spoof with AI.

So, what you're saying is you want someone to make a machine that can clone their handwriting.

Perfectly cloning someones handwriting so that it is indistinguishable in all circumstances is generally considered not fully possible

The same is true for perfectly cloning your own handwriting.
